Meet Lindsay Burton '19, one of the many innovative, forward-thinking individuals who make up CMC's vibrant student body. Lindsay's CMC story is about the desire to tackle complex problems, to learn and lead in and out of the classroom, to make a positive impact. Follow her journey from CMC Army ROTC to Tangiers, Morocco, and learn more about the countless opportunities available to all CMC students.

HANDS-ON RESEARCH

"I am currently project leader and content manager for the Rose Institute of State and Local Government. My research project centers around gathering information on the history of terrorist attacks in California. I work with students and professors to build a database that tracks every terrorist attack in the state and the narrative behind it. We're looking to build an interactive website to share this information with government entities and the public."

ON-CAMPUS LEADERSHIP

"CMC's ROTC program requires critical thinking, thoughtful explanation, and constructive dialogue, which instill competent leadership skills for tomorrow's challenges in national defense. As an incoming junior, I will work with my peers to administer squad, platoon, company, and battalion sized elements of cadets in training exercises to further their education in warrior tasks and physical fitness."

REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE

"With ROTC and CMC scholarship funding, I participated in CMC's Washington Program, where I interned for the House Foreign Affairs Committee and attended night classes taught by CMC professors. Some of my duties for the HFAC included conducting research on international relations, authoring memorandums, and hosting foreign dignitaries."

OPPORTUNITY ABROAD

"CMC has awesome resources to help students get outside scholarship opportunities. The summer after my freshman year, I received a fully-funded opportunity from Project GO to travel to Amman, Jordan and attend an intensive Arabic Language program. This summer, with the State Department's fully-funded Critical Language Scholarship, I will travel to Tangier, Morocco to study Arabic for eight weeks."

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

"This past year, I represented California and Hawaii in the national committee of the 'It's On Us' campaign to end campus sexual assault. I had the opportunity to work with students from all over both states to spread the message. I also got to make a friend or two along the way, including former Vice-President Joe Biden. My interest with 'It's On Us' was sparked by the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses nationwide, and my desire to make CMC and other campuses better places for all."
