Dr Surin Pitsuwan is the Secretary-General of ASEAN for the January 2008–December 2012 period. His leadership has brought prominent world leaders, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, US President Barack Obama, China Premier Wen Jiabao and numerous others to the recent 19th ASEAN Summit for closer cooperation. To bring ASEAN closer to the people, he's personally visited numerous universities, business communities, and the civil society. He's also supported outreach activities through ASEAN Cultural Show and Exhibition, Rickshaw Run, Culinary Festival and Fun Bike. Dr Surin continues to help unify ASEAN Member States seen through his recent visit to Cambodia where he met with H.M the King Norodom Sihamoni, senior government officials, and stakeholders. He is a native of Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Southern Thailand. A graduate in political science from Claremont Men's College in Political Science (cum laude), Dr Surin holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University supported by the Winston S. Churchill Association and the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships.
