CONFERENCE WIND-UP: FRANK GIBNEY

Yesterday's assumptions about the future of the Pacific basin have been challenged by events that are rocking the economic, social and political foundations of many Asian countries. The role of the media in reporting these events and translating them to local and worldwide audiences will be critical to intelligent and honest decision-making, quelling fear, and developing public support for measures that in many cases may have painful consequences. Furthermore, the ability of Asia's media to report on these and other events is often influenced by sensitive relations with government and by a set of values that are not always understood in the West. This conference will examine the role of the media in the Asia Pacific world, and media coverage of Asia in the United States in this time of economic crisis.
Experts from the media, the academy and government from throughout the Pacific basin have been assembled to discuss the role and future of Asia Pacific media. Please join us for what promises to be a stimulating exchange of views.
The conference will be held In the city of Claremont, California on the campuses of Claremont McKenna College and Pomona College. Two conference programs will be held at UCLA. Members of the general public are invited to attend breakfast, lunch or dinner at Claremont McKenna College, Pomona College and UCLA by reservation only.
