CMC earns top free speech rating

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has given Claremont McKenna College its highest rating for free speech. Among the 39 colleges and universities to earn FIRE’s “green” rating, CMC is the only California institution, and the only liberal arts college.

The FIRE rating is based on the strengths of college policies protecting free speech. CMC has been a leader not only in affirming free speech principles, but in incorporating the values of free expression in the classroom and through campus programming such as the Athenaeum lectures.

Claremont McKenna College President Hiram E. Chodosh said the top-rating by FIRE reflects CMC’s commitment to maintaining “a tight-knit, politically diverse academic community in which everyone shares the values and skills needed to speak and learn freely, listen actively, inquire critically, debate respectfully, and solve problems through effective dialogue.”
