CMS Bids Farewell to Longtime Women's Tennis Coach Maxanne Retzlaff; Elevated Athenas to a Nationally Prominent Program During Her Career

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) announces the resignation of Maxanne Retzlaff, Head Coach for Women's Tennis, effective immediately. After 20 years in the position, Retzlaff is stepping down to pursue other professional opportunities and to spend more time with her family.

Retzlaff was appointed Head Coach Women's Tennis in 1992. During her time as Head Coach, the Athenas tennis team has been a perennial conference power and one of the best Division III teams in the nation. The overall record for this period is 317 wins in 450 matches for a .704 winning percentage. In the conference, the team has won 175 out of 199 matches, which works out to be a .879 winning percentage, and have been conference champions 14 times.

In 2006, Coach Retzlaff was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division III Women's National Coach of the Year when her 2006 Athenas finished third in the nation, which was the best finish by a CMS women's team in any sport. In 2012, the Athenas finished the season as conference champions, ranked #1 in the West Region and #8 in the ITA Division III National Team Rankings.

"I want to thank Maxanne for her enduring contributions to the growth of Women's Tennis at CMS. She elevated Athenas tennis to a nationally prominent program as well as a dominant team in the SCIAC," said Director of Athletics Mike Sutton, "We wish her the very best of luck in the future."
