Daniel Patrick MoynihanIn his first California appearance in three years, former United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan will address CMC students, faculty and guests at 7:00 p.m. today, Monday, March 19th, at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. Senator Moynihan will be introduced by James Q. Wilson, emeritus professor at UCLA and Ronald Reagan professor of public policy at Pepperdine University. A question-and-answer session will follow the senator's lecture.
The lecture will be webcast here. In addition to watching the lecture webcast, overflow seating for a live video feed is available at the adjacent McKenna Auditorium on a first-come, first-served basis.
From 1976 until his retirement this year, Senator Moynihan was a driving force in the U.S. Senate, chairing the Committee on the Environment and Public Works and serving as a member of the Committee on Finance. In addition to being elected a Senator from the State of New York, he has also been appointed to the posts of U.S. Ambassador to India, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, and President of the U.N. Security Council. He is the only person in United States history to serve four consecutive presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.
He is currently a professor at the Maxwell School for Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and a senior public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars. He has also taught at Harvard University and the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
Senator Moynihan graduated cum laude from Tufts University, studied at the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar, and received his doctorate from the Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
In addition to speaking on campus, Senator Moynihan will speak as the Inaugural Pacesetter Fellow at the CMC Res Publica luncheon on Tuesday, March 20, at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The Pacesetters program was established to bring leaders in business, academia, and public affairs to CMC for classroom visits and interaction with students.
