If there was ever a phrase to sum up Lewis Black's recent appearance on his Red, White, and Screwed tour, it is undoubtedly, "There's no such thing as bad words." Black brought his brand of political humor and aggressive social commentary to Bridges Auditorium on Feb. 8 to a nearly sold-out crowd. The complimentary blend of Claremont Colleges students and Claremont-area residents rolled in the aisles as Black teetered between mocking the foibles of Judaism and mocking the foibles of the Iraq war.
Following the neurotic humor stylings of his opening act, John Bowman, Black took the stage to the tune of his typical anthem, AC/DC's Back in Black. After a few potshots at religion, he delved into the political commentary most Claremont students came to hear. As expected, he showed contempt for Congressional priorities: "You don't want people burning the flag, then pass a law making them flame-retardant!" Continuing his disdain for the political process, he then gave a prediction on the 2008 presidential race: "I can guarantee that by the time we elect whoever it is, we're going to hate their guts."
Above all, Black's re-enactment of Dick Cheney's hunting accident was a certain crowd favorite. As Cheney's target was in front of him and his friend by his side, the fact that Cheney seemingly shot in the wrong direction, for Black, explains how the United States entered Iraq. He also showed contempt for the sport itself. "Going quail hunting is like going fishing and going to the goldfish bowl. I got one!" But to assail any thoughts of Black as an animal activist, he said of PETA, "I'd like to get people their rights first, then I'll get the monkey a lawyer."
He even incorporated current events.
"I didn't think astronauts fell in love! And now they're in a love triangle? But the diaper . . . She traveled 900 miles and put on the diaper so she didn't have to stop. But wouldn't she have to stop for gas? And these are our rocket scientists!"
The crowd undeniably enjoyed its time with Lewis Black. And Black gave The Claremont Colleges a resounding approval. "This is idyllic! Look what you have here! Do you know what you have here? This is truly as good as it's going to get, this idyllic land."
