The Berger Institute for Family, Work, and Children
On Saturday, March 24 the Berger Institute will sponsor its first ever conference for CMC women (and men) of all ages, stages, and choices, examining the ways that they struggle for balance in the work/family spectrum. Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies
Ten CMC students will represent the nation of Russia at the Harvard World Model United Nations, March 26-30, 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. Hosted in a different international location each spring, 17 simulated committees of the United Nations and other international organizations gather to discuss the issues facing this generation. Through lively and informed debate, exciting social events, and a unique conference spirit, the WorldMUN experience reaches across cultures and borders to inspire both cooperation and friendship. The Keck Center is sponsoring these CMC students at the event: Tauseef Rahman, Amanda Brawner, Ben Carrier, Jenny Small, Jamie Dillon, and Jacquelyn Bean, all Class of 2007; Ilana Kegel and Michelle Betz, Class of 2008; Simon Shogry '09; and Shamil Hargovan '10.

The Keck Center has a newly published monograph, The Expansion of NATO and the European Union, edited by associate professor of government Hilary Appel.

Kravis Leadership Institute
Claremont McKenna College and The Kravis Leadership Institute announced the selection of Fazle Abed, founder of BRAC, to receive the second annual Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership. The Kravis Prize, which carries a $250,000 award designated to the recipient's organization, honors extraordinary leadership in the nonprofit sector. Mr. Abed was selected for his innovative work in microenterprise, health, and education.

The Winter 2007 issue of Kravis' peer-reviewed journal Leadership Review is available online at www.leadershipreview.org.

Susan Murphy, associate professor of psychology and associate director of the Kravis Leadership Institute, presented remarks at the Mentoring Café on Jan. 18. The Mentoring Café is hosted by the CMC Student Alumni Relations Council, in conjunction with the College's alumni association, and enables current students to network with participating alumni and explore career interests while, in some cases, landing jobs or internships.

KLI hosted Dr. David De Cremer, professor of social psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands and currently a research fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, whose work is at the intersection of social psychology and economics. Dr. De Cremer presented his formal lecture at the Athenaeum, Social Psychology and Economics: Some Illustrations in the fields of Fairness and Leadership, in addition to meeting with both faculty and students about their research projects.

KLI director Ron Riggio, together with Crystal Hoyt '97 and George Goethals from the University of Richmond, published a chapter on Leader-Follower Relations: Group Dynamics and the Role of Leadership, for the book The Quest for a General Theory of Leadership (edited by Goethals and Georgia Sorenson, Edward Elgar Publishers).

Capabilities of the Consummate Networker, an article by Jay Conger, the Henry R. Kravis Research Chair in Leadership Studies, has been accepted by Organizational Dynamics. It will appear in Vol. 36, No.1, in early spring 2007.

Lowe Institute of Political Economy
Tauseef Rahman '07 has been selected as the 2006-2007 Baker-Lowe Scholar. Rahman's paper is on Production Networks and Economic Growth in Southeast Asia. The Baker-Lowe Scholars Program of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy is designed for advanced economics majors with interests in public affairs and political economy.

Joseph Matt '99, recently elected to the Lowe Institute's Board of Governors, will meet with various Lowe Institute research assistants and selected students to discuss his position as an investment analyst with Capital Research Global Investors.

The Rose Institute for State and Local Government
