Homes Sweet Homes

Eleven new houses in the Arbol Verde neighborhood are welcoming CMC faculty and staff this fall

As real estate prices continue rising in Claremont and surrounding areas, CMC is working to meet the needs of its faculty and staff by building additional properties to expand the College's rental program. With the completion of two new developments this fall and renovation of existing properties, CMC will now be able to make more rental units available to new and current faculty and staff at subsidized rates.

The newest additions to the Arbol Verde community, just south of CMC between First and Sixth Streets and east of Mills Avenue, include 11 new single-family rental homes. Residents will move into the first group of eight homes on Harwood Place in August. Six of these homes measure 1,350 square feet, and two are 700 square feet. Another development, on Blanchard Place, will be complete in September. It consists of three new homes and the renovation of a property at First Street and Claremont Boulevard.

The design and "footprint" of these houses will preserve the single-family atmosphere of the Arbol Verde community, with the new units featuring variation in exteriors and landscaping that will complement the neighborhood surrounding El Barrio Park. That park, which was constructed in 1972 through joint efforts between the city, its residents, and CMC, was owned by the College but has since been dedicated to the city to remain a park in perpetuity.

Once the new homes are bustling with their new occupants, CMC will begin construction of a new tennis center in the land north of Harwood Place and south of the College's parking lot on Sixth Street. This facility, which is tentatively scheduled for completion in July 2008, will feature 12 courts with new-technology low-height lighting, a recreation field, and a clubhouse with three separate buildings providing restrooms, locker facilities, coach offices, and meeting space.

A development agreement between CMC and the city of Claremont allows for the College to develop property north of Harwood Court and south of Sixth Street—within the east/west boundaries of Claremont Boulevard and Mills Avenue—for College facilities, including parking lots and playing fields. The land south of Harwood Court may be developed for residential use.
