Fifteen CMC students with interests in technology careers have been selected to attend the Third Annual Silicon Valley Information Technology Advisory Board Networking Trip, scheduled Jan. 6-12. Designed to provide students with networking opportunities and meaningful exposure to diverse careers in technology, this year's trip has been extended by a day to accommodate visits to eight companies over five days: Apple, Applied Materials, Google, Infosys, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Weston Presidio, and Yahoo.
Comprehensive planning makes this whirlwind trip possible, and this year is the best planned ever. "The ITAB trip experience has come of age, in a sense," said CMC's Chief Technology Officer Cynthia Humes. "In terms of the College's management of it, my assistant Linda Tuthill and I now have a track record of what has worked, what has not, and what might work. The efficiency has increased and is more streamlined as we have come to better understand what our students and our alumni, parents, and friends at corporations need."
The Information Technology Advisory Board sponsors the annual trip which—in addition to company visits hosted by CMC alumni—includes a reception for the Silicon Valley chapter of the Claremont McKenna College Alumni Association. Ashwin Navin '99, president and co-founder of BitTorrent, Inc., will be the keynote speaker for the alumni and parent reception on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008.
Connections made on the trip have proven to be fruitful, as a number of students who attended the ITAB trip in previous years have become employed in the technology field.
"There are just so many insights that you learn about Silicon Valley and what's going on there," said Daniel Shi '07, who now works in the IT field for Aragon Consulting Group.
"I think at CMC and with this current generation, nobody can say for certain where their careers will take them in five years. So it helps immensely to have a feel for as many different industries and sectors as possible. And the other thing is that this trip exposes you to ambitious and successful people. Really, this is what CMC does best. It shows us what it takes to be successful and presses us to follow."
