Claremont's Museum of Art offers free, monthly art workshops plus unique gifts

The Claremont Museum of Art in the new Claremont Packing House atrium offers free art workshops for people of all ages from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month.

New projects are featured monthly, using materials collected from Trash for Teaching, which gathers old industrial objects and recycles them. The Sunday, Dec. 16 workshop will provide materials to create origami Christmas ornaments.

The museum's accompanying art store also offers an eclectic variety of books, children's activities, clothing, household goods, and jewelry and accessories for possible gift-giving, including silk ties, handmade silver cufflinks, bracelets from South Africa (made of safety pins, telephone wire, and glass beads), purses and wallets made of newspaper, and silver handbags fashioned from aluminum pull tabs by artists in a Brazilian women's cooperative.

Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday; open until 8:30 p.m. the first Friday of the month; and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

Admission is $3 for adults, and free for guests under the age of 18.

The Claremont Museum of Art is located at 536 W. First St.
