Interview: Author/critic Daniel Mendelsohn on the power of myth

Why study the humanities? For award-winning author Daniel Mendelsohn (The Lost), the humanities are essential to "enhanc[ing] our sense of what it means to be a human being." Mendelsohn visited CMC this semester as William F. Podlich Distinguished Fellow. During his three-week tenure, he has given classroom lectures about his work, the state of contemporary criticism, and the abiding lessons in the foundational stories of the Western canon. The general campus community will have an opportunity to hear Mendelsohn describe his work-in-progress, An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic, at the Athenaeum on Feb. 18.
