Michael Sutton Named CMS Athletic Director

Michael SuttonMichael Sutton has been named Athletic Director for Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges (CMS). He is a 1976 graduate of Claremont McKenna College and has served as Acting Athletic Director since fall 2000.
This is Sutton's 22nd year with the College. He has coached men's swimming and men's water polo for 21 and 19 years, respectively. Under his direction, both teams earned impressive records, with 18 SCIAC titles and six NCAA second-place finishes for men's swimming, and 15 SCIAC titles, three Western Water Polo Association titles, and Top 10 NCAA ranking for men's water polo. Sutton also coached women's swimming for one year, with a second-place SCIAC finish.
"Mike Sutton is not only an outstanding leader and former athlete but also a role model in the best tradition of mentor coaching," said Pamela Gann, CMC President. "He is respected and admired by students, faculty and staff alike, and together we are looking forward to another long and successful chapter in CMS athletics."
Sutton was named Coach of the Year by NCAA Division III in 1983, and by the American Water Polo Coaches Association in 1997.
He served as Team Leader for the United States Water Polo Men's National Team during the 1992 Quadrennial and also served as liaison for U.S. water polo with the United States Olympic Committee in preparation for the Pan American Games and the Olympics. In addition, he managed arrangements for the FINA World Cups and World Championships in Berlin, Barcelona, and Perth, as well as protocol and arrangements for international teams visiting the U.S.
Sutton has served on the NCAA Swimming and Water Polo Rules/Championships Committees, has chaired the SCIAC Swim Coaches Committee since 1995, and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Western Water Polo Association since 1986.
Sutton earned his master's degree in sports administration from the United States Sports Academy, Mobile, Al., and studied at the graduate level at California State University, Fullerton, and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He received his bachelor's degree in history from CMC in 1976.
