Several CMS spring teams head into NCAA postseason play
It has been an exceptional spring for CMS Athletics as five teams (men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s tennis and men’s track & field) won their sport’s conference championships, while the softball team won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament. Several spring teams are represented in their respective NCAA Championships over the upcoming weeks in May.
Women’s Golf The Athena golf team won the SCIAC title for the third year in a row. While the Athenas as a team did not get an invite to the NCAA Championships, the NCAA invited Maya Reddy ’14 (CMC) and Tiffany Su ’15 (CMC) to compete as individuals, May 13-16 at the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Men’s Golf The Stag golf team won its 10th SCIAC Championship in program history and first since 1995 after a first-place finish in the SCIAC Championship Tournament. With the automatic qualification from winning the conference, CMS competes in the NCAA Golf Championships to be held May 13-16 in Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
Softball The Athena softball team went 3-1 May 2-3 at the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, winning the tournament for the third season in row and earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament. CMS has advanced to an NCAA regional hosted by Redlands May 9-10. CMS will play Linfield at 11 a.m. and Redlands at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Women’s Tennis The Athena tennis team hosted and won the SCIAC Championships May 2-3, defeating La Verne 5-4 in the finals to win conference. Next up for the Athenas is the NCAA Championships which begin with regional play May 9-11, hosted by CMS at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Men’s Tennis The Stags won their ninth-straight SCIAC title to earn the automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships. No. 1 ranked CMS hosts No. 22 UC Santa Cruz in the second round of NCAA regionals on Friday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Should CMS defeat Santa Cruz, they would play for the regional championship on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m., also hosted by CMS. Track & Field The Stags won the overall conference championship for the 21st time in school history while the Athenas finished the conference season in second place overall. Both teams have a few more events over the next week for individuals to qualify for the NCAA Championships which run from May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.
