Tartan Snack: Monday, Oct. 10
Be There. Be Square. Eat Cake.

He put the "M" in McKenna, and arguably won more than a few Scrabble games in his day. Donald McKenna, founding trustee of Claremont McKenna College, was big on words, but even bigger on the College. And on Monday, Oct. 10, students will gather at Collins Dining Hall for a round of Happy Birthday with cake and ice cream to celebrate the 104th birthday of the man to whom Kevin Starr dedicated the College's official history.
Oh, and did we mention plane tickets? Grab your finest tartan attire for the occasion and you'll be entered into a drawing for two airline tickets to Scotland. That's IF you pass the muster of the "tartan vs. plaid" judge who will be manning the door for this special Snack Night. It's become tradition to host a Tartan Snack each year on the eve of October 10. Why? Tartan is a pattern of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical stripes of varying colors and sizes, representative of the Scottish and Irish culture, and often used interchangeablyat least here, in North Americawith the word plaid. We can't help but wonder what Mr. McKennaan established word sleuthwould have thought about one term versus another, but more importantly, the wearing of tartan to Tartan Snack pays homage to McKenna's Scottish ancestral heritage.
Tartan Snack kicks off at Collins at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. Singing voice is optional, but fun is required. All CMC students, whether or not on the meal plan, are welcome; IDs required. Kendyl Klein '14
