U.S. Envoy to the Middle East / Ireland George Mitchell Featured Speaker at Res Publica Series

Senator George Mitchell, Clinton Administration envoy to the Middle East and Northern Ireland, will be the featured speaker at Claremont McKenna College's Res Publica Speaker Series Friday, November 17. Mitchell will talk about his role brokering peace in Northern Ireland in his address, "Making Peace in Northern Ireland."

The White House announced today (November 9) that Mitchell will lead an international inquiry into the cause of the current violence between Israel and the Palestinians. Mitchell, who helped bring about the Northern Ireland peace agreement of 1998, will be joined in the inquiry by former senator Warren Rudman (R-NH); former President Suleyman Demirel of Turkey; Foreign Minister Thorbjorn Jagland of Norway; and the former secretary general of NATO, Javier Solana of Spain.

Mitchell was first appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of Maine Senator Edmund Muskie, who resigned to become Secretary of State. He was elected to a full term in the Senate in 1982, eventually spending a total of 14 years serving his constituents. In 1988, Mitchell earned 81 percent of the vote and he earned the respect of his peers by being voted "most respected member" for six consecutive years. He retired from the Senate in 1995 as Senate Majority Leader, a position he had held since 1989.

Recently, Mitchell served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. Under his leadership, the governments of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the political parties of Northern Ireland agreed upon an historic accord. In 1998, voters of Northern and Southern Ireland endorsed the agreement.

Mitchell has written a number of books including Not for America Alone: The Triumph of Democracy and the Fall of Communism and World on Fire . He earned his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and his L.L.B. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

A reception honoring Mitchell begins at 11:45 a.m. followed by a luncheon and general remarks at 12:00 noon. This event will take place in the Crystal Room of The Regal Biltmore Hotel, 506 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles.
