Global Education Opportunities for CMC Students
CMC Faculty-Led Spring Break Visit to Kuwait
The University of Kuwait has invited Professors Bassam Frangieh (Modern Languages: Arabic) and Lisa Cody (History) to lead a group of CMC students to Kuwait during spring break (March 10-19, 2011) as the first half of an international, educational exchange. All expenses in Kuwait, including lodging, meals, domestic travel, and activities will be covered by the University of Kuwait; CMC students will be responsible for paying their airfare to and from Kuwait and incidental, personal expenses. In return, President Pamela Gann has invited a group of students and faculty from the University of Kuwait to visit CMC in late January 2012.
Israel Studies Program
Professor Gary Gilbert (Religious Studies) has designed and will direct a three-part opportunity for CMC students and CMC community members to study and experience the city of Jerusalem. The program consists of three segments, each of which can be enjoyed alone or in combination. The first segment will be Professor Gilbert’s full-credit course, “Jerusalem the Holy City,” offered as an intensive three-week seminar at CMC (May 23-June 10) as part of CMC’s Summer Session. The second segment will be a nine-day travel program to Jerusalem (June 14-22) led by Professor Gary Gilbert and including meetings with Israeli politicians, academics, and public policy experts. Priority will be given to current CMC students, but alumni and members of the Claremont community may also apply to join this travel trip. The third segment will permit students to experience the excitement of uncovering the past through an archaeological excavation in Akko, Israel (July 3-29). Through participation in the dig, students learn about the city’s history, and participate in the contemporary life of a city with a mixed Jewish and Arab population. CMC financial aid will be available for qualified CMC students for the course and Career Service grants will be available for CMC students.
CMC-Yonsei University Summer Courses in Korea
Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea has invited Professor Manfred Keil (RDS) to lead ten CMC students for a five-week international business and economics course at Yonsei Business School (July 8 to August 13, 2011). The CMC-Yonsei University Summer Course will include a 1.5 credit course co-taught by Professor Keil and Professor at Yonsei University and site visits to South Korean corporations and firms as well as domestic excursions and travel to Hong Kong or another city in China. Students will live on campus with Yonsei students in Yonsei University housing. CMC students will be responsible for a portion of course costs and airfare, but financial aid will be available for qualified CMC students.
CMC Summer Program in Jordan
Professor Bassam Frangieh (Modern Languages: Arabic) and Aleta Wenger (Center for Global Education) will lead a group of CMC and Claremont College students to Amman, Jordan for an intensive eight-week travel, education, and practicum experience. Students will receive two full course credits, one for an Arabic language course, to be taught by a University of Jordan faculty member, and the other for Arabic/Middle Eastern Studies course, to be taught by Professor Frangieh. As part of Arabic/MES course, Ms. Wenger will arrange an individualized practicum in Amman for each student in a workplace relevant to her or his interests, major, and Arabic language abilities. The eight-week program will include visits to historical sites, cultural venues, and weekend travel to significant Jordanian sites, such as Petra, which will be sponsored by CMC alumnus. Financial aid will be available to CMC students.
In addition to these new international opportunities for students, the College will once again host a Summer Session Program on campus between May 23 and July 1, 2011 with approximately twenty courses from nearly every CMC department and field. Half of the courses will be offered as intensive three-week, full-credit courses (May 23 to June 10, 2011), which will allow summer students to also participate in CMC’s trips to Yonsei University and Israel if desired. Students will be permitted to enroll in one or two summer session courses and CMC financial aid will be available to qualified CMC students.
