Academic Standards Committee Petition Instructions

Students who wish to request an exception to academic policy at CMC may petition the Academic Standards Committee (ASC). Petitions must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office in writing and accompanied by appropriate documentation.

The ASC has approved specific petition forms for requesting an Incomplete or Late Withdrawal grade. These forms are available at the Registrar’s Office, at the Dean of Students Office, and on the forms section of the Registrar’s Website. For requests other than Incompletes or Late Withdrawals, please be sure your petition includes the following:

  • A formal letter in which you clearly state your request and the reasons you believe the ASC should approve it.
  • A statement from the faculty member(s) involved: This statement should include whether and why the faculty member supports or does not support your petition, or other relevant circumstances that would help the ASC to render a correct decision. If you are reluctant to request a statement from a faculty member, you should speak to the Registrar or Dean of Students prior to filing your petition.
  • A statement from your academic advisor regarding your request, similar to the statement from the faculty member(s).
  • Appropriate documentation of the circumstances which necessitate your request. For example, if the reason for your request regards a medical condition, include a letter from your physician. Other documentation may include obituaries or memorial programs, police reports, hospital discharge papers, syllabi, letters from therapists or counselors, or similar third-party documentation which corroborates or supports your request.

The ASC will accept requests received via email or fax in addition to those sent by mail or submitted in person. Please submit all your petition materials to the Registrar’s Office. When your petition is complete, the Registrar will forward it to the ASC for consideration. The ASC will inform you of its decision in writing once it has fully considered your request.
