The Rose Institute stresses a high level of interaction between students and faculty. In their research on state and local government, students and faculty work side by side. Students receive guidance and instruction from professors, fellows and research associates experienced in the operations of both the public and private sectors. While every student has experience working with faculty members and senior staff on an individual basis, the Rose Institute student staff is overseen by senior student managers. Student managers develop leadership and management skills. At the Rose Institute, students learn valuable job skills while working in a friendly, yet professional environment. Students learn both research techniques and interpersonal skills. Most students work at the Rose Institute for all four years spent at Claremont McKenna College, thereby allowing them to form a close relationship with other student employees as well as the faculty. A mentoring process occurs whereby the veteran researchers help train the new employees. Meetings of all Rose Institute employees are held regularly to check the progress of current projects and to inform all students of the status of the various projects. Any general concerns can be addressed at this time because all staff members are present. Although many ideas for new projects come from outside sources or faculty advisors, students can also initiate new project ideas. Rose Institute researchers are selected from a large pool of applicants from the Claremont McKenna College student body. Students must survive a strenuous interview process conducted by both faculty and student management. As a group, the student staff contributes a wide range of talents to the various research projects. The staff is diverse in both interests and experience. At the Rose Institute, the high level of communication and interaction between the students and faculty allows for a positive learning and working environment. The structure of the relationship between faculty and students permits research projects to be accomplished in an efficient manner while serving as an educational experience for all those involved. |
