CMC’s marathon run

Spring-Summer 2015

Earlier this spring a large group of 26 students, along with alumni, faculty, and staff (including one humbled sophomore president), joined together to run the LA Marathon.

Our students inspired national attention through a story in Runner’s World Magazine and raised nearly $80,000 in support of The Student Imperative for financial aid and scholarships.

They reinforced the singular commitments of Claremont McKenna College: indefatigable service leadership; healthy competition; and strong teamwork.

And they mirrored the marathon run of the College itself, with many milestones to celebrate (some illustrated by this issue of CMC magazine) along our special course of achievement: from the vote for coeducation in 1975 and the success of our first women pioneer students to the twin anniversaries of the Kravis Leadership Institute (20th) and the Kravis Prize (10th); from the generous, multi-faceted contributions of our leading CMC families (the Mgrublians and their commitment to human rights), to our outstanding teacher-scholars (Rod Camp, Seth Lobis, Ellen Rentz, Daniel Michon, Albert Park, Sarah Smith Orr, and many others), to the achievements of our extraordinary students (Anoush Baghdassarian ’17 and our champion CMS Tennis and Swimming & Diving teams) and our outstanding alumni (Jonathan Rosenberg ’83 P’15 and David Merriam ’60).

I predict our students will not stop at a single marathon, and our College will continue to accelerate on its own steep historic course.

Thank you all for joining in this journey.

Together we will go the distance.

Very Best,

— Hiram
