KLI to Co-Host International Leadership Association Conference

Claremont McKenna College's Kravis Leadership Institute (KLI) and the University of Southern California will co-host the 10th annual International Leadership Association conference Wednesday, Nov. 12 through Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Hyatt Century Plaza hotel in Century City, Calif. The theme for this year's conference is Global Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future.

Ron Riggio, director of KLI and CMC's Henry R. Kravis Professor of Leadership and Organizational Psychology, will welcome guests to the conference as the 2008 conference co-chair. Jay Conger, the Henry R. Kravis Research Professor in Leadership Studies, is the keynote speaker for the conference's closing session on Saturday. The title of his speech is "Leadership in the Boardroom: Time to Reset Expectations."

Additional CMC students and faculty will present at the conference. Nicholas Warner, professor of literature, will present his paper, "Leadership in Melville's Moby Dick," and conduct a workshop titled "Approaching Leadership Through Film." Weichun Zhu, KLI senior research fellow, will present "Ethical Leadership," and Gregory Hall '09 will present his paper, "Building Global Leaders," as well as lead a team of studentsincluding Daniel Kan '09 and Maria Lohner '10in the International Leadership Association Student Case Competition. Also participating in the conference are CMC alumni Crystal Hoyt '97 and Joanna Balda '06.

Highlights of the conference include recognition of senior leadership scholars who will be presented with lifetime achievement awards. These include Warren Bennis from the University of Southern California, Frances Hesselbein, Chairman of Leader to Leader Institute, James MacGregor Burns from Williams College, and Manfred Kets de Vries from INSEAD. Also, the Claremont McKenna College student group, Mariachi Serrano de Claremont, will perform at the opening reception.

The Kravis Leadership Institute sponsors leadership studies and the Leadership Sequence at Claremont McKenna College. The Institute hosts conferences, workshops, and speaker series as well as contributes to the growing body of knowledge in the field by conducting research on leadership applications.
