Student Opportunities

We encourage all students with an interest in economics to participate in the programs of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy. Our programs include: Baker-Lowe Scholarship, faculty-student research projects, internships, a public lecture series at the Athenaeum and academic conferences.


Research Analysts

The Lowe Institute of Political Economy is seeking student research analysts for the 2015-16 academic year. The students will work closely with faculty members at CMC. Specific responsibilities include preparing and analyzing databases, programming, web site management, and administrative work for the Institute. In addition, students will be involved with faculty on a variety of empirically-based research projects.

Students are expected to work up to 5 to 10 hours per week. The rate of pay is $9 to $12 per hour.

Applicants should complete and submit the application with a 1) cover letter, 2) resume, 3) one page, analytical, writing sample and 4) an unofficial transcript to the Program Coordinator, Kelly Lockhart Spetnagel in Bauer 322.

Baker Lowe Scholar

The Baker-Lowe Scholars Program of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy is designed for advanced economics majors with interests in public affairs and political economy. Recipients of the awards will write a research paper on a selected public policy issue for presentation at the spring Board of Governors meeting. The institute provides research supervision and assistance. Recipients may receive $2,500 cash stipends or ½ course credit.

2017 Lowe Summer Internship Program

Application deadline: March 31, 2017

The Lowe Institute of Political Economy is pleased to announce summer internships for CMC students. CMC students interested in domestic internships with public policy think-tanks and private sector firms may apply for Lowe Institute support. The highly-selective Lowe Internship Program is open to CMC rising juniors and seniors with preference given to economics majors. Internships can originate with the sponsoring agency, be designed by the student with agency approval, or be coordinated by CMC faculty or alumni. Awards of up to $10,000 are available to assist with travel and living expenses associated with the 8-10 week internship. Awards are based on the academic record of the applicant, relevant extracurricular activities, recommendation, and merit of the internship proposal. A 5-10 page paper summarizing your internship will be due the first week of school.

Qualified applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • An outstanding record of achievement in and out of the classroom
  • Demonstrated academic research and analysis skills
  • Outstanding team spirit with excellent communication and writing skills
  • Passionate, eager to learn new things and to solve difficult problems
  • Proficient in STATA, Excel, and other MS Office products
  • The ability to work 40+ hours per week for 8-10 weeks
