  • French is one of the top ten languages in the world with a total of 270 million speakers.
  • French is spoken officially in 33 countries - that is, there are 33 countries in which French is either the official language, or one of the official languages. This number is second only to English, which is spoken officially in 45 countries.
  • French is one of the six official languages of the United Nations with Arabic, English, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian, and Spanish.
  • French is also one of the most prominent languages of the European Union.
  • French is the second most commonly-taught second language in the world (after English).
  • The French language opens the way to a wide variety of professional opportunities at the national and international levels.
  • French is a must for students contemplating graduate studies in French, History, International Relations, Literature, and other disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences. French also provides a solid background for a career in a variety of fields including international affairs, journalism, communication, the arts, business, education, and law.

Finally, in our increasingly interconnected world, knowing at least two international languages is indispensable, and French definitely appears as a sound choice.
