Our Nation Divided: What CMC Can Do

CMC Community Roundtable
Friday, February 10, 2017
9:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Security Pacific Dining Room, Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum

Given the deep divides that we are currently experiencing in our society, it is vital that our community comes together to participate in conversations to help identify the knowledge, experiences, and capabilities we need as an institution and as engaged members of society both to do well and to do good.

On Friday, February 10, the College will host a community roundtable for students, faculty, and staff. This is an opportunity to leverage the powerful expertise and leadership on our campus, building on our shared commitment to strong, mutual support and friendship across political lines; reflective, open inquiry about an uncertain world; and a dedication to learn and make a difference in our constitutional democracy and the world beyond.

Friday, February 10

  • 9:15 a.m.: Check-In and Light Refreshments
  • 9:35 a.m.: Introductory Remarks
  • 9:45 – 10:25 a.m.: Session #1 – What kinds of knowledge, experiences, and capabilities do we need to succeed and do “well” in a divided nation and world? What kinds of knowledge, experiences, and capabilities do we need to engage in complex problem solving and to do “good” in our divided nation and world?
  • 10:25 – 11:15 a.m.: Session #2 – What is CMC as a liberal arts college already doing to impart the kinds of knowledge, experiences, and capabilities we need to do “well” and do “good” in our divided nation and world?  What more can we do to support and challenge ourselves to do both “well” and “good”?
