Award-winning NYT Columnist
and Author, Andrew Ross Sorkin: Nov. 16

New York Times chief mergers and acquisitions reporter and columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin will visit CMC on Tuesday, Nov. 16 for his talk, "The Politics of Too Big to Fail," named in part for his 2009 New York Times bestseller. The event will be held at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, with the public portion of the program beginning at 6:45 p.m. Seating is free on a first-come basis.
As part of his visit, Sorkin also will address members of the Res Publica Society of Claremont McKenna College during a Nov. 17 luncheon in downtown Los Angeles.
Sorkin, a leading voice about Wall Street and corporate America, is founder and editor of DealBook, an online daily financial news service published by The Times. He also is an assistant editor of business and finance news, described by New York Magazine as "the most famous financial journalist of his generation."
His book, Too Big To Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System and Themselves, is the behind-the-scenes, moment-by-moment account of how the financial crisis developed into a global tsunami. From inside the corner office at Lehman Brothers to secret meetings in South Korea, Russia, and the corridors of Washington, Sorkin reconstructs the drama and turmoil. Says Sorkin, "I tried to bring to life the machinations, interlinking relationships, and even some of the duplicity among the various players involved while answering the big question: How did it all happen?" The book was called one of the best books of the year by The Economist, The Financial Times and Business Week.
Named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, Sorkin received a Gerald Loeb Award, the highest honor in business journalism, for breaking news, and won the 2010 Loeb Award for Best Business Book. He also is a two-time winner of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers Award for breaking news. SiliconAlleyInsider.com called him one of New York's "most influential scribes," and Vanity Fair named him one of 40 new members of the "Next Establishment."
Sorkin began writing for The Times in 1995 under unusual circumstances: he hadn't yet graduated from high school. He continued to write for the paper during his college days at Cornell and while studying abroad in London, publishing 71 articles on media, business and technology before he graduated.
DealBook, which Sorkin created in 2001, began as one of the first financial news aggregation services on the Web. He developed it into an award-winning blog providing exclusive interviews, original analysis, and breaking news about mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, private equity transactions and venture capital deals.
Sorkin is a regular guest host of CNBC's Squawk Box and appears frequently on MSNBC's Morning Joe. He has appeared on many other programs, including Good Morning America, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Charlie Rose.
