Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Award-Winning Journalist and CNN Africa Bureau Chief, Visits on Tuesday, Feb. 5

Charlayne Hunter-Gault, award-winning journalist and chief of CNN's Africa bureau, will speak at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Hunter-Gault, a recipient of both Peabody and Emmy Awards for her work in broadcast journalism, first made her mark on history 41 years ago as one of two students to desegregate the University of Georgia in Athens. "It was with a heady sense of history that we started out for Athens, my mother, Vernon Jordan, and I," she recalled in her memoir, In My Place.

Hunter-Gault joined CNN after serving as National Public Radio's chief correspondent in Africa. She worked for 20 years at PBS, where she served as national correspondent for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Her career path also brought her to The New Yorker, The New York Times, and WRC-TV, Washington, D.C.
