CMC Rated Number One In Community Service Work-Study Survey Of Top Liberal Arts Colleges

Claremont McKenna College has been ranked first among liberal arts colleges for commitment to community service-based federal work-study. The findings appear in the current issue of Washington Monthly, from a study commissioned by the magazine and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Titled The Other College Rankings, the article contends that "it's not that students don't want to serve; it's that schools don't give them enough opportunity." The findings are based on data submitted by the colleges, and interviews with dozens of college presidents, students, financial aid officers, lobbyists, and nonprofit directors.

Community service work-study opportunities for CMC students include working with four area junior high schools in programs for after-school activities, healthy nutrition, and Upward Bound homework assistance; serving as teacher aides in local elementary schools; ESL tutoring for CMC staff; working in city-sponsored youth sports and after-school programs; and participating in America Reads and America Counts math and literacy programs.

"The strength of our work-study service opportunities reflects a real commitment to provide meaningful and relevant interaction for our students, beyond the walls of the campus and into the local schools, playgrounds, and communities," said Pamela B. Gann, CMC President. "Our students, and our neighbors, are the beneficiaries of these programs."

At first place, CMC committed 19.7 % of its federal work-study funds to community service jobs for its students, compared to a national average of less than 12%, according to Department of Education figures cited by Washington Monthly. Other colleges on the survey include Colby College (18.7%), Amherst College (16%), Swarthmore College (11.1 %), Middlebury College (10.5%), Williams College (9.9%), Smith College (9.2%), Grinnell College (7.4%), Vassar College (6.3%), Pomona College (5.5%), and Bryn Mawr (5%). Among private universities, Stanford placed first at 22.3%, with others on the list including Emory University (13.8%), Columbia University (12.5%), Harvard University (12.3%), Yale University (11.2%), Cal Tech (9.5%), and Northwestern University (8.8%).

Claremont McKenna College is a highly selective independent liberal arts college educating leaders in business and public affairs. CMC enrolls 1,000 students and is a member of The Claremont Colleges.
