CMS Hosting NCAA Men's
Tennis Championships: May 19-24

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will continue its long, successful history of hosting the NCAA tennis championships in Claremont when eight teams arrive this month to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, scheduled Tuesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 24, at the new Biszantz Family Tennis Center at CMC.
CMS hosted its first men's NCAA championships at the Marks and Smith Courts in 1980, then again in 1986, 1991, and 1999. The women's championships were hosted by CMS in 1983 and 1989. This year's NCAA Division III championships cap off a celebration of the grand opening of the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, a state-of-the-art facility for all of intercollegiate tennis.
Located at Sixth Street and Brooks Avenue, the new tennis center offers locker rooms, offices, 12 lighted Plexipave tennis courtsall with permanent seatingplus a clubhouse, observation deck, and recreation/practice field adjacent to the facility.
Play begins on Tuesday, May 19 for the eight teams competing for the Division III Team National Championship, while the top 32 singles players and the top 16 doubles teams will vie for individual national championships beginning Friday, May 22.
Although CMS has established a history of hosting the NCAAs, this is the first year that the championships will be predominantly student-run. (The student operations team consists of eight studentssix from Claremont McKenna College, one from Pitzer College, and another from Scripps College. The student team launched a Web site for the championships among its other responsibilities.
The dedicated Web site will include real-time results and live scoring for the team and individual championships, a link to RadioTennis.com, a tournament schedule, daily photos, videos, and more.
The tournament's student organizers, all from CMS men's tennis coach Paul Settles' Sports Event Management class, have each taken responsibility for one or more areas of the tournament.
"I am very proud of the work our student leaders have done in preparing for the championships," Settles says. "They have been involved in every aspect of planning and implementation of a first-class event. I am excited to see how the event operates under the leadership of this student management team."
The team championship begins May 19 and runs through May 21, while the individual singles and doubles tournaments run from May 22-24.
