CMS Names Charles Griffiths Head Coach, Men's And Women's Swimming; Denison Grad and Coach Arrives July 1

Charles GriffithsAthletic Director Michael Sutton has announced the appointment of Charles Griffiths as head coach for men's and women's swimming at CMS, the combined athletic program for Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps colleges. Griffiths, who will also be an instructor of physical education and athletics, joins CMS July 1.
Griffiths joins CMS from Denison University, Granville, Ohio, where he was assistant men's and women's swim coach, a post he has held since 1998. While at Denison, Griffiths helped lead the women's team to the 2001 Division III NCAA title. Prior to joining Denison, he was head coach and assistant aquatic director at the Oshkosh Community YMCA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Griffiths graduated from Denison in 1995, where he was a two-time NCAA qualifier, and a seven-time all NCAC swimmer. Sutton calls Griffiths a "classic example of a Division III success story - a walk-on swimmer who developed into a national caliber athlete."
"I am impressed by his thoughtful intensity and work ethic. He understands the world of the Division III student-athlete and has a wealth of experience with the type of swimmers we attract to CMS," Sutton said.
Griffiths said he looks forward to coming to Claremont and joining the CMS program, which combines an excellent academic reputation with a strong history of swimming success, including SCIAC championships nine of the past 10 years, and two NCAA All-Americans in 2001.
