Professor John Roth Receives U.S. Holocaust Memorial Award

John K. Roth, the Edward J. Sexton Professor of Philosophy and director of CMC's Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights, has received the Ina Levine Scholar-in-Residence Award at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States Holocaust Memorial, where he will be in residence during the 2004-05 academic year.

"I am immensely pleased and honored," Roth said. "Not only will this appointment allow me to do research in one of the world's most distinguished scholarly institutions, but also it provides opportunities to link the Museum with CMC's new Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights. Those links can be helpful for CMC students and faculty alike."

The Levine award recognizes excellence in the pursuit of innovative research or teaching about the Holocaust. The purpose of the award is to provide the recipient with an opportunity for concentrated research and writing in a venue where discussion and debate with other scholars will lead to the highest level of scholarly achievement. Roth is only the fourth recipient of the recently-established Levine award.

Roth plans to use his sabbatical leave to work on two books, Ethics During and After the Holocaust, and The Palgrave Guide to Philosophy, Genocide, and Human Rights. Roth was also named U.S. National Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
