Professor Leonard Dart Memorial Services

A memorial service for Professor Emeritus Leonard Dart, long-time faculty member and co-founder of the Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Scripps, and Pitzer Colleges, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, at the Friends Meeting, 727 West Harrison, Claremont. Professor Dart, 85, died on Sunday, July 12, at his home.

Professor Dart was a lifelong scientist and educator. He received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, and earned his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Notre Dame, where he also formed a barbershop quartet with his roommates. He joined the CMC faculty in 1954, just eight years after the College's founding.

"Leonard was a fine physicist and one of the architects of the Joint Science Department, and had much to do with its success over the years," said Sam Tanenbaum, Joint Science associate dean.

Graydon Bell, Harvey Mudd College professor emeritus of physics and founding faculty member, remembers his long-time friend and colleague as "an outstanding teacher, very creative, and a fine person."

Professor Dart retired in 1983, and was honored by Claremont McKenna College as an Honorary Life Member of the CMC Alumni Association, an award bestowed upon individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to the College.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Mt. San Antonio Gardens Homeship Fund.
