Stags Defeat Whittier To Clinch SCIAC Title

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team made College history Thursday night, beating Whittier 84-52 to win the SCIAC title, and becoming the first team in SCIAC history to win 13 conference games. The Stags will now compete in the NCAA championship playoffs, with first-round play scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28.

"The team played really well, and it was a nice way to win at least a share of the title," says Michael Sutton, CMS athletics director.

Prior to Thursday's victory, CMS and Cal Lutheran were tied for the conference title. But while CMS beat out Whittier Thursday, Cal Lutheran slipped in rank, losing to Pomona-Pitzer by a single point that same evening.

"It was a perfect conclusion to the season," Sutton says. "Our hats go off to Pomona-Pitzer for the upset, and we are especially proud of our home team."

Five CMS players scored in the double digits during Thursday's game, including Christian Dundas '04, who scored 15 points.
