GradGuard Renters Insurance

CMC is pleased to provide eligible students living on campus, studying abroad, and participating in the Washington, D.C. program with individual GradGuard Renters Insurance coverage at no cost.

This benefit includes:

  • Up to $10,000 in personal property coverage
  • Up to $100,000 in personal liability coverage

This coverage is designed to help protect your belongings and provide peace of mind during your time at CMC.


What's Covered?

Your GradGuard policy includes valuable protections such as:

  • Theft and fire protection, including covered losses involving items such as laptops, bicycles, and skateboards
  • Worldwide property coverage, so your belongings remain protected while studying abroad
  • Personal liability protection
  • Replacement cost endorsement for covered personal property losses
  • Preferred rates available for Claremont McKenna College residents

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

This benefit is available to eligible Claremont McKenna College students who are:

  • Living in campus housing
  • Participating in approved study abroad programs
  • Participating in the Washington, D.C. program

Does this coverage cost me anything?

No. Eligible students receive this coverage as a benefit provided by CMC.

Can I choose not to participate?

Yes. Participation is optional.

If you already have renters insurance or prefer a different policy with higher coverage limits, you may opt out by completing the GradGuard Opt-Out Form in your StarRez Portal before the start of the academic year. Please check your email for more information on specific deadlines.

Please note that you cannot maintain two renters insurance policies covering the same property, including coverage through an existing personal renters insurance policy.


Important Coverage Information

While CMC provides this insurance benefit, the College is not responsible for reimbursing students for personal property that is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Additionally, GradGuard does not cover:

  • Accidental damage to residence hall rooms caused by decorations or similar activities
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Residence hall damage charges assessed during move-out

Important Tip

Keep records of your valuable belongings.

Saving receipts, taking photos, or maintaining other proof of ownership can make the claims process much easier should you ever need to file a claim.
