Robin Peterson ’22

Claremont McKenna’s once-a-year surf-ski day was a compelling bonus to Robin Peterson’s list of pros for the College.

“CMC offered everything I could have hoped for,” said Peterson’22. “On top of the beautiful weather, the small school made it possible for me to engage in everything from great academics, to running track, to having Army ROTC.”

In addition, she’s been an attentive student of Prof. Jennifer Taw, who specializes in U.S. foreign policy and security studies. “I’ve taken a class with her almost every semester since my sophomore year,” said Peterson. “I always tell myself that I’m going to try new professors, but I keep going back to her expertise in security studies. Before taking her security studies class, I had a very narrow view of national security and defense, but I’ve really expanded and learned so much from Prof. Taw’s intelligence."

While challenging herself academically, Peterson is also working to round out her experience at CMC. In addition to the ROTC, which Peterson sees as a stepping stone to her career goal of becoming a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army—a position that takes command of a platoon—she's a research assistant on two projects at the Rose Institute of State and Local Government, vice president of the Outdoor Initiative club, and a pole vaulter and javelin thrower for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team. "I love being a part of a driven, passionate community that strives to find balance between academics and getting the most out of CMC," she said, 

She also appreciates the fact that the College offers mental health services for students and the Dean of Students is readily available. “I didn’t expect CMC to have such wonderful deans who answer the phone at any hour of the day and connect students to resources so they can be successful,” said Peterson.

When she graduates this spring, Peterson will commission as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. After completing her Basic Officer Training Course in Arizona, Peterson hopes to be stationed in Italy, Germany, or Fort Bragg. Following her time in the Army, Peterson plans to pursue a career in public service, either at the state department or another government agency.

No matter where Peterson eventually lands, she said, “I hope to serve others.”
