Sports Bowl Fact Sheet

The Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for use by individuals associated with Claremont McKenna College and CMS Athletics. CMC wi-fi is accessible throughout the Sports Bowl.

The overall site is approximately 75 acres to be completed in two phases. The current Phase I is approximately 35 acres and consists of the Patrick G. Rogan Stadium (football, lacrosse, and track & field), Athena Field (softball), Arce Field (baseball), a golf training center, a two-level parking structure for Claremont McKenna College use, a surface parking lot for Pitzer College use, ROTC offices, a Public Safety & Emergency Management Office, as well as a CMC Facilities storage building and service yard.

Arce Field includes a lighted baseball field, two bullpens, tension netting for foul balls, the Rolla Family Scoreboard, and four buildings: 

  • Press Box: 1,145 square feet
  • Coach Town Clubhouse: 2,479 square feet with 642 square foot locker room
  • Visitor Dugout: 1,099 square feet 
  • Nutting Family Training Center: 6,335 square feet
  • Seating Capacity: 186 fixed seats

Athena Field includes a lighted softball field, two bullpens, tension netting for foul balls, a video scoreboard, and four buildings:

  • Press Box: 1,145 square feet
  • Home Clubhouse: 2,479 square feet with 642 square foot locker room
  • Visitor Dugout: 1,099 square feet 
  • Easton Foundations Training Center: 6,335 square feet
  • Seating Capacity: 186 fixed seats

Patrick G. Rogan Stadium includes a lighted multiuse field (football, lacrosse), a track venue, a video scoreboard, and four buildings: 

  • Press Box: 2,451 square feet with the press box, two multi-purpose rooms, restrooms, and beverage vending machines
  • East Field House: 4,116 square feet includes 1,359 square feet ROTC offices, restrooms, and a 1,216 square foot multipurpose and visiting team room
  • West Field House: 4,112 square feet includes the 1,220 square foot Martindale Family football locker room, 1,220 square foot women’s lacrosse locker room, and 801 square feet of dedicated bathroom and shower facilities
  • North Field House: 13,828 square feet includes:
    • Lower Level: 7,198 square feet includes the Vallier Family Sports Medicine Center and a CMS equipment and laundry facility 
    • Upper Level: 6,630 square feet includes 1,167 square foot men’s and women’s cross country/track & field locker rooms, 1,931 square foot common room, coaches/referee dressing room, restrooms, and beverage vending machines
  • Seating Capacity: 1,211 fixed seats, comprised of 900 seats at the Home Stands and 311 seats at the Visitor Stands. Additional informal seating landscaped areas are available at the Arce Field and Athena Field outfield areas, as well as around the Rogan Stadium.

Golf Training Center

  • Outdoor short game practice area: 29,616 square feet
  • Indoor Golf Performance Lab area: 3,800 square feet with three Trackman hitting bays, the Rose Family Putting Lab with a PuttView putting green and tilting platform, and a video review space 

During the design process, CMS Athletics administration prioritized athlete health, safety, and sports performance when considering synthetic turf products. The major priorities in turf selection were navigating the concern of PFAS chemicals within synthetic turf and heat management. Ultimately, CMS selected FieldTurf products due to their comprehensive testing protocols, stringent PFAS reduction manufacturing standards and heat management properties. With CMS, Lloyd Sports + Engineering consultants specified FieldTurf’s sport-specific turf surfaces and unique infill combinations across each venue including preferred feel and aesthetics.

The Rogan Stadium field installed FieldTurf’s Vertex Core 2.5 paired with a Cool Play and Crumb Rubber infill. The Cool Play is designed as a heat reducing element applied as a topdressing infill. The Rogan Stadium field also features a water cannon system to additionally cool the field for play.

For Arce Field and Athena Field, distinct systems were selected to mimic traditional field conditions. The baseball outfield features FieldTurf’s Double Play Fast Grass with Cool Play and Crumb Rubber, while the infield utilizes Double Play Fast Clay with a Pure Select (sand and olive pit) and Cool Play infill blend. Similarly, the softball outfield utilizes Triple Threat Fast Grass with Cool Play and Crumb Rubber, paired with Triple Threat Fast Clay and the Pure Select and Cool Play blend on the infield.

For the Golf Training Center outdoor short game area, X-Grass products were specified for all areas with Short Game Elite used for the greens, Ultra Natural for the fringe areas and Ultimate Tee for the tee boxes. These golf surfaces are top-dressed with an Envirofill and Silica Sand infill mixture.

All these surfaces have been designed to deliver state-of-the-art turf fields that will set CMS atop NCAA DIII athletic facilities for years to come.

The stadium track features a Beynon Sports BSS 1000 system with an embedded texture. The track is Benyon Sport’s Performance Series and is widely utilized across collegiate and international track and field facilities. It is a full-pour polyurethane system mixed with fine Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) granules. It contains two-component polyurethane, establishing a complete chemical bond to the underlying asphalt. The surface is completely impermeable to water protecting the subbase from premature weathering and cracking. It features a bio-engineered, shock-absorbing cushion layer designed to optimize athlete safety by offering superior traction and cushioning. Track coaches frequently note that the BSS 1000 reduces athlete fatigue and stress fractures.

Field Lighting

  • Musco Lighting was selected to light the Sports Bowl fields and practice areas. Their custom multi-zone aiming system eliminates harsh shadows and dark zones on the turf. This delivers whiter, sharper visual quality engineered specifically for high-definition streaming. Unlike metal-halide lights that require 15 minutes to warm up, Musco’s LED lights turn on, off, or dim instantly. Finally, their glare control technology keeps light strictly concentrated on the playing surface. This stops invasive spill from leaking into neighboring areas.

General Sports Bowl Lighting

  • Designed by CMC campus master lighting consultant KGM, the lighting design balances occupant safety, performance, energy conservation, and environmental stewardship across both interior and exterior zones.  Pedestrian pathways are illuminated using campus-standard Cooper LED light pole fixtures with mounting heights optimized to meet lighting requirements and preserving campus visual standards while minimizing energy draw.
  • Dark Sky Compliance & Environmental Protection: To protect the local night sky and surrounding environment, all exterior fixtures are Dark Sky compliant. Precision optics and full-cutoff shielding prevent light pollution, skyglow, and off-site light trespass while maintaining focal light on intended surfaces.

Rogan Stadium, Arce Field and Athena Field feature state-of-the-art Daktronic video scoreboards. Features include:

  • Tight pixel pitch that provides viewers with pristine image clarity.
  • High-contrast specialized louvers that shade individual LEDs from overhead sunlight. This maintains deep black levels and vivid contrast even during mid-afternoon games without overdriving power consumption.
  • Intelligent auto-dimming optical sensors that automatically scale brightness down for night games and up for bright daylight, protecting spectators' eyes and conserving utility costs.
  • Impact-resistant display face built to withstand stray baseballs, softballs, or high-velocity football impacts without shattering individual pixels.
  • Arce Field and Athena Field scoreboard dimensions are 36' x 20’ with digital scoreboard at the bottom and LED video displays at the top
  • Rogan Stadium LED video scoreboard dimensions are 28’ x 19’ with flexible aspect ratios and software that allows seamless layout transitions from football to lacrosse to track and field
  • The Sports Bowl includes 529 parking spaces, with 391 stalls provided in the CMC two-level parking structure, and an elevator for ease of travel between the levels.  There are 138 stalls provided in the Pitzer parking lot.  Bike racks are provided for use by Sports Bowl visitors and as a secondary method of travel for drivers.
  • Access to parking spaces is controlled by card readers, keypads, and gate arms.
  • Initially, the CMC Parking Structure will have 12 charging station spaces and the Pitzer parking lot will have 12 charging station spaces. There is capacity to expand the number of charging station spaces.

The Arcade is a 155-foot long covered pedestrian path underneath Claremont Boulevard. At 20’ wide with 12’ ceiling height, it enhances campus connectivity between main campus and the Sports Bowl providing a safe pedestrian thoroughfare. The Arcade will also connect the CMC Parking Structure’s 391 parking spaces to the main campus. The Arcade’s ‘peeling’ concrete bands design expands and anchors its West entrance within the landscape and lighting to create an inviting and generous portal to the Sports Bowl. On the opposite side, an oculus punctuates the center of the parking structure providing a natural light filled approach to greet students, athletes, and spectators as well as faculty and staff commuters.

Located in the southern end of the lower level of the CMC Parking Structure, the new CMC Public Safety & Emergency Management Office, provides an operations headquarters and serves as the emergency management hub for the CMC campus. 

The new Captain Robert Stanberry ’61 ROTC offices are located in the East Field House at the Sports Bowl and will serve as the home of CMC’s ROTC program. It will house all the department offices and share use of the multipurpose room and storage with CMS Athletics. 

  • The Sports Bowl was designed to take advantage of the existing topography of the previous gravel quarry. As compared to filling and leveling the site, this strategy mitigated the need to import 1.6 million cubic yards of fill and thus reducing the environmental impacts associated with sourcing, loading and trucking fill material such as emissions and dust that contribute to global warming and diminish local air quality.
  • All gravel on field structure roofs as well as rocks and boulders utilized in landscape rock swales throughout the Sports Bowl were sourced onsite.
  • 65% of construction and demolition debris generated by the project is salvaged, reused or recycled.
  • Landscape plantings consist of locally indigenous native plant species, including Engelmann Oaks and California Sycamores. Native planting zones within the Sports Bowl landscape are organized to reflect the site's natural topography and hydrology, with drought-tolerant species located on drier slopes and ridgelines and moisture-adapted species concentrated in lower, wetter areas. This approach mimics the natural ecological patterns of the San Gabriel Mountains and supports a more resilient, water-efficient landscape.
  • The irrigation system has been designed as a high-efficiency, automated water management solution that ensures optimal plant health while significantly reducing water use. The system incorporates advanced moisture sensors, flow meters, and precision-controlled valves to adaptively deliver water based on real-time soil conditions and evapotranspiration rates.
  • Inspired by the natural hydrology of the San Gabriel Foothills, stormwater is collected through dry wells, vegetated swales, riparian landscape areas and a 221,867 cubic foot stormwater retention chamber underneath the Rogan Stadium field. The system captures runoff from the campus and surrounding upstream areas, manages 100-year storm events, reduces flood risk, and helps restore a more natural water cycle by supporting and filtering groundwater recharge. In an average rain year this stormwater retention chamber will capture and recharge to groundwater 7.4 million cubic feet of water. A house uses about 11K cubic feet of water annually so this chamber will provide enough annual water for about 675 homes.
  • Plans include adding a photovoltaic solar array to the CMC Parking Structure.
  • Nakasone Field is the home of the CMS women’s and men’s soccer programs and has been sized to meet NCAA soccer field specifications. Within its over 3.5 acres of natural turf, Nakasone Field’s soccer dimensions are 120 yards long and 80 yards wide – the maximum allowable by the NCAA. With these field dimensions, CMS is now eligible to host NCAA tournaments.
  • Natural Turf Features
    • Nakasone Field is covered with Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass. Tahoma 31 has achieved mass adoption for competitive soccer due to its high density, rapid healing from cleat damage, and tight footing.
    • In Southern California, Tahoma 31 has been successfully installed at local collegiate soccer fields including USC, Pepperdine and UC San Diego and sports stadiums including Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium, the LA Coliseum, the Rose Bowl, and the LA Galaxy’s Dignity Health Stadium.
    • Tahoma 31 uses 20% to 60% less water than traditional grasses.
  • Nakasone Field will also host CMS Track & Field Spring competitions in the shot put, javelin and discus events.
  • Nakasone Field’s lighting system was enhanced and its press box renovated.
  • A four-way traffic signal was installed at the 9th Street and Claremont Boulevard intersection to provide a safe pathway for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.
  • New sidewalks, protected bike lanes and improved median and parkway landscaping and fencing are in the process of being installed from 6th Street to Foothill Boulevard.
  • All of Claremont Boulevard will be resurfaced with new LED streetlights and a bus shelter installed, and all power poles removed with utilities placed underground.

CMC contributed significantly to the City of Claremont’s improvements to these roadways.  In Upland, CMC made street improvements to add a right turn lane and extend the box culverts. Remaining is the replacement of the chain link fence to the new Sports Bowl fence and to plant and irrigate the portion in Upland.
