Summary of Responsibilities During Building Evacuations

FACULTY: Ensure you keep a class roster with you in the event of an emergency/drill.

  • Clear your classroom and close the door. (Do NOT lock the door.)
  • Have students leave the building in an orderly manner via the nearest available exit. Take personal items only if safe to do so and you have time.
  • Assist any people with disabilities needing help. (See “Shared Responsibilities” section below.)
  • Have students proceed outside to the designated evacuation assembly area, no less than 100 feet from the building.
  • Take a headcount to ensure that all students are accounted for. Report to the Building Safety Coordinator when all are clear and accounted for.
  • Report missing people to Building Safety Coordinators.
  • Assist in preventing individuals from returning to the building until the “all clear” has been given by police or fire personnel.
  • Do not re-enter the affected area until instructed to do so by CMC Public Safety, the Safety Manager, or emergency responders.
  • Do not dismiss students unless told to do so by college administrators.

STAFF:

  • Assist others in your work area to evacuate the building via the nearest available exit.
  • Make sure your area is clear and then close the door. (Do NOT lock the door.)
  • Assist any people with disabilities needing help. (See “Shared Responsibilities” section below.)
  • Have visitors and members of your department proceed to the designated evacuation assembly area via the nearest available exit. This area should be a minimum of 100 feet from the building.
  • Keep streets, fire lanes, fire hydrants, and walkways clear for responding emergency vehicles and personnel. Ask others to keep these areas clear as well.
  • Take a headcount or roll call to ensure that all personnel are accounted for. Report missing people to the Incident Manager.
  • Prevent any unauthorized re-entry into the building.
  • Do not re-enter the affected area until instructed to do so by CMC Public Safety, the Incident Manager, or designated emergency responders.
  • Do not leave the assembly area or re-enter the building until instructed to do so by college administrators.

Students/Visitors

  • Proceed to the designated evacuation assembly area via the nearest available exit. This area should be a minimum of 100 feet from the building.

  • Report to your faculty or other supervisor during the headcount.
  • Report any missing people to your faculty or other supervisor.
  • Do not re-enter the affected area until instructed to do so by CMC Public Safety, the Incident Manager, or designated emergency responders.
  • Do not leave the assembly area or re-enter the building until instructed to do so by college administrators.

SAFETY COORDINATORS: Ensure you keep the building roster with you in the event of an emergency/drill.

  • Don your Building Safety Coordinator vest.
  • Grab your red emergency bag and radio. Radios should be tuned to channel 3-16.
  • Make sure your area is clear and then close the door. (Do NOT lock the door.)
  • Assist any disabled individuals needing help. (See “Shared Responsibilities” section below.)
  • Have visitors and members of your department proceed to the designated evacuation assembly area via the nearest available exit. This area should be a minimum of 100 feet from the building.
  • Keep streets, fire lanes, fire hydrants, and walkways clear for responding emergency vehicles and personnel. Ask others to keep these areas clear as well.

  • Call the Incident Manager on your radio when all are clear and accounted for.
  • Assist in preventing individuals from returning to the building until the “all clear” has been given by safety or fire personnel.
  • Do not take it upon yourself to turn off an alarm or to instruct others to re-enter. This will be done by designated emergency personnel only.
  • Do not re-enter the affected area until instructed to do so by CMC Public Safety, the Safety Manager or emergency responders.
  • Do not dismiss CMC employees unless told to do so by college administrators.

INCIDENT MANAGER: this role will typically be filled by the Emergency Preparedness and Safety Manager or other trained incident management official.

  • Report to the assembly area to gather information from Building Safety Coordinators.
  • Communicate with the emergency responder’s all pertinent information, such as missing or trapped individuals.
  • Communicate with other campus incident management teams all pertinent information.
  • Ensure safety of all patrons at the scene.

SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES BY ALL CMC EMPLOYEES:

  • Assist any students, faculty or staff in exiting the building.
  • Assist disabled persons in exiting the building.

DO NOT USE ELEVATORS IN CASE OF A FIRE

If mobility-impaired persons are on the upper floors of a building, have them go to the top landing of an enclosed stairwell. Such an area will provide fire protection for two hours. Stay with the person if possible and notify Campus Safety or emergency response personnel to assist with moving the individual from the building.
