CMCReturns - Learn more about our Fall return to campus

Athenaeum Guidelines

  • Attendance at any event may be limited to persons associated with CMC, to the people who signed up for the dinner, or to the maximum number of people allowed by fire regulations.

  • House rules and common courtesy prohibit disruptive actions inside the building during an Athenaeum sponsored program.

  • Time allowing, there will be a period set aside for questions. Students will have priority during this portion of the program.

  • Guests are expected to dress appropriately in all dining rooms. Shorts, jeans, and t-shirts are not acceptable at dinner; more casual attire is acceptable for lunch and tea. No bare feet at any time.

Recording Policy

  • It is the policy of the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum that no lecture, appearance or performance by any speaker or performer at the Athenaeum is to be videotaped, audio-taped, or otherwise recorded and/or broadcast without the prior permission of the relevant speaker, performer, or other authorized owner of the intellectual property rights to the event.

  • Anyone requesting permission to record an event is required to submit an “Event Recording Request Form” to the director of the Athenaeum, at least 48 hours in advance of the relevant event.

  • It is understood that the speaker, the performer, the Athenaeum, and any other event sponsor, as appropriate, reserve all intellectual property rights for each Athenaeum event.

  • If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact the director at

  • Reservations for Athenaeum meals are required in advance.

  • Due to limited dining capacity, meal reservations are initially open to CMC community members only. Space permitting, students, faculty, and staff from the 5Cs are subsequently able to sign up for events.

  • CMC faculty and staff may bring one family member to each Athenaeum meal free of charge. Subject to availability, additional guests may attend lunch for $17.50 and dinner for $20. Please contact the Athenaeum directly for additional guest reservations.

  • CMC students may not bring guests without prior Athenaeum approval.

  • Meals are free of charge to all undergraduate students, faculty, and staff of the five Claremont Colleges. CGU students, faculty, and staff may attend lunch for $17.50 and dinner for $20.

Additional Information

  • Due to limited seating capacity, the Athenaeum reserves the right to restrict dinner spots for selected presentations to CMC community members only.

  • Reservations generally are not required to attend the speaker presentation portion of the programs, which typically begin at 12:15 p.m. for lunch programs and 6:45 p.m. for evening programs. The Athenaeum reserves the right to limit attendance to the presentation portion.

  • If the speaker consents and technical assistance is available, the College may set up a live video feed for overflow crowds situated in other campus venues.

  • On some occasions, the speaker may address the group in another forum other than the Athenaeum.
