Position Description

The Roberts Environmental Center EcoReps serve the CMC Community as student liaisons between the administration and student body. They aim to promote sustainable practices on campus by connecting students to information, resources, funding, and the CMC  administration.

The EcoReps promote energy- and water-saving, low-waste living, sustainable eating, and alternative transportation in tangible ways, such as organizing panels on current events and pursuing long-lasting sustainability initiatives on campus. 
Examples include hosting plant-based dinners,  hosting workshops, facilitating panels on current events, and more.  EcoReps  will lead energy-, waste-, and water-reducing initiatives to support CMC’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality, reducing CMC’s expenditures, and increasing the number of students engaged in environmental initiatives.

The REC believes that everyone has something unique to contribute to the conversation and that sustainability requires a community-based culture of awareness, care, and engagement 

The position works flexible weekly hours (an average of 3 hours per week and a limit of 5) during the academic school year at $16.90/hr.

EcoReps Desired Qualifications:

• Must be passionate for making sustainable changes at the campus level
• Organize and host events during the academic year
• Balance fun events (like glow in the dark volleyball and hikes), educational events (like speakers and documentary screenings) and advocacy events (like phone banks and letter writing to government officials), while reaching a wide variety of students
• Project management, communications, campaign development/implementation, and other events and projects as needed Help students create project proposals for specific initiatives to be implemented on campus that can be applied to CMC’s Sustainability Fund to receive funding
• Post information about recycling, energy, and water reduction in dorms
• Help implement Sustainability Fund projects if applicable
• Work to improve the sustainable infrastructure and operations of residence halls through reported observations and suggestions to supervisor at the REC
• Provide weekly updates to supervisor

  • All EcoReps are expected to attend a bi-monthly team meeting. Please list your anticipated commitments for the upcoming fall semester (e.g. number of semester units and course load intensity, employment/internship, volunteer work, athletics, student organizations, etc.).  Include an estimated number of hours per week as well as your role within the commitment.

The REC Climate Education Interns (2 interns) potential projects include:

• Refine and teach climate science curriculum for local 6th graders
• Teach environmental curriculum to incarcerated adult students

Two interns will be hired.

Qualifications / Skills:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Coursework in environmental science and related fields
• Organized, communicative, and able to meet deadlines
• Experience with building and/or delivering educational curriculum preferred
• Ability to work collaboratively and engage with different populations

Position Details: 3-4 hours per week, $16 per hour

Job Responsibilities:

• Curate relevant existing climate resources 
• Work independently and collaboratively to teach curriculum
• Refine curriculum in response to feedback

The REC Communications Intern will work with the REC faculty, staff, and students to curate the Center’s outreach, website and social media presence, including promoting interactive and engaging content, expanding the alumni network, and growing digital outreach.

Social Media and Content Coordinator Job Responsibilities:

• Develop and curate engaging content for social media platforms
• Assist in the creation and editing of written, video, and photo content
• Collaborate with public affairs team to create stories/content
• Interact and respond to social media messages, inquiries, and comments
• Possibly create reports on key metrics
• Help produce and manage tailored content, typically for the web
• Write and edit various types of content, including bi-monthly newsletters and as-needed website content

Commitment: 2-3 hours per week, $16 per hour

Social Media Coordinator Qualifications / Skills:

• Experience with writing and social media management tools
• Proficiency with photo editing tools, digital media formats, and HTML
• Good verbal communication skills
• Good time management skills
• Detail-oriented approach with ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
• Must be self-motivated

Position Description

The Roberts Environmental Center (REC) is looking for a student intern interested in collecting and analyzing campus environmental data for CMC’s sustainability reports, annual STARS submission, Climate Action Plan, and website. The position provides experience with data analysis, communication, design, committee work, leadership development and will contribute toward CMC’s attainment of carbon neutrality date of 2050. All applicants must possess strong computer and written communication skills, be detail-oriented, and be dedicated, independent workers.

Position Details

• Hours: 2-5 hours per week; Monday through Friday; flexible schedule will be set after hiring
• Wage: $16.00 per hour

Position Requirements

• Must have experience with Excel and data collection
• Must be self-motivated
• Must be able to reach out to campus departments for collecting data
• Basic experience with graphic layout design

Program

The Roberts Environmental Center (REC) is excited to announce the Summer 2024 Eastern Sierra Research Station Summer Fellowships. The fellowships will provide 5C students the opportunity to participate in place-based environmental programming and carry out an environmental field research project in the Eastern Sierra region. Housing is provided, and up to 4 interns will be funded. On-site advisors and experts in the Lee Vining/Mono Lake/Mammoth area will be accessible (more details below). Included will be:

• Region-specific lectures
• REC and local expert-led educational activities/field trips
• Presentations on place-specific environmental topics
• Fellow-led field trips and discussions
• Final research project and presentation
• Potential for follow-up research during the academic year, supported by the REC, based on data/findings of the summer fellows

Purpose 

The program’s goal is to expose students to the resources of the Eastern Sierra region and science research methods around environmental issues. Students will be provided with hands-on scientific experience to discover how environmental research can be integrated into sustainable policy development.

Eligibility 

Preference is given to students with a good academic record, a commitment to learning more about environmental research in the natural and social sciences, and an interest in living in nature. No prior research experience is required, and interns will be trained on-site for appropriate research methodology. All students should be curious and aware that research often takes many hours of work to produce results.

About the REC 

The principal goal of the REC is to involve students in real-world environmental issues and to train them to analyze the issues from as broad a perspective as possible, taking science, economics, and policy into consideration. Based in Claremont McKenna College, the REC strives to cultivate environmental leadership within its student body.

Program Dates and Time Commitment Expected from the Student 

The program will be conducted June 15 - July 15 2024. Due to the snowpack this year, the internship start date might be pushed back a week. Adequate notification will be given. To successfully complete the program, students should be willing to make a commitment of 35-40 hours per week for the entire 4-week period and attend all scheduled outdoor education activities. This may include weekend activities.

Living Conditions and Benefits 

A modest stipend will be provided. Fully furnished (although somewhat rustic) housing is provided at the REC Research Station cabin in Lee Vining. There will be a property manager and project supervisors living in the surrounding towns. A car or bike is recommended for transportation while in the area.

The cabin is at the doorstep of the eastern entrance to Yosemite and in a unique natural preserve canyon. The local area is comprised of sagebrush steppe, pinyon-juniper, and Jeffrey pine forest plant communities. It also contains 46,000 acres of Mono Lake, numerous 12,000+ foot Sierra peaks, and plug-dome volcanoes. The closest town is Lee Vining (pop. 400, elev. 6,780'), which is also adjacent to the Mono Lake, Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area and the Ansel Adams and Hoover wilderness areas. Lee Vining is situated along Highway 395, 30 miles north of Mammoth Lakes, California and 110 miles south of Carson City, Nevada.
