College Policy regarding Two-Year Opt-Out Tenure Clock Extension Due to Covid-19

In April 2020, the CMC faculty and Board of Trustees approved a one-year opt-out tenure clock extension due to Covid-19 for all tenure-track faculty employed at CMC at that time.

In the April 2021, the CMC faculty and Board of Trustees approved an additional one-year opt-out tenure clock extension for all tenure-track faculty employed at CMC during the 2020-2021 academic year. This would mean, by default, a two-year opt-out tenure clock extension for all tenure-track faculty employed at CMC during both Spring 2020 and AY 2020-2021 and a one-year opt-out extension for all tenure-track faculty who joined CMC during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Specifically, the current policy is:

Tenure-track faculty employed at CMC during both Spring 2020 and AY 2020-2021 will automatically receive a two-year opt-out tenure clock extension. Tenure-track faculty who joined CMC during AY 2020-2021 will automatically receive only a one-year opt-out tenure clock extension.

  1. No tenure-track faculty member is obliged to accept either the one-year or two-year extension; they may choose instead to follow the original review schedule, choose a one-year extension, or choose a two-year extension.
  2. A tenure-track faculty member due for reappointment review will by default have the extension added to the time period before their reappointment review. However, a candidate may choose to opt out of the one-year or two-year extension either before reappointment (if applicable) or between reappointment and tenure. Candidates may choose to allocate their two-year extension in the following ways: two years before reappointment, two years between reappointment and tenure, or one year before reappointment and one year between reappointment and tenure.
    1. If the candidate chooses to opt out of the extension before reappointment, their decision must be made in writing to the Dean of Faculty and the Department no later than March 31st of the year before the reappointment review. This does not affect their ability to decide whether or not to opt out of the tenure clock extension between reappointment and tenure.
    2. If the candidate decides to opt out of the extension between reappointment and tenure, their decision must be made in writing to the Dean of Faculty and the Department no later than March 31st of the year before the tenure review.
